Rectal diseases Proctology - different complaints and diseases

Proctology is a very complex medical field that therefore also deals with various clinical pictures that affect the rectum. Many of these conditions can also be treated without surgery or alternatively with outpatient procedures. This depends on individual factors and is therefore explained and discussed in more detail during a preliminary examination.

At the practice in Heidelberg, the proctology team focuses primarily on the following areas:

  • Hemorrhoids
  • Perianal vein thrombosis (mariscus)
  • Pilonidal fistulas
  • anal fissure

Many of these conditions are accompanied by pain and unpleasant side effects. You should therefore not wait too long to seek medical advice.

Hemorrhoids - treating a common condition correctly

Problems with haemorrhoids are known to many and are accompanied by unpleasant symptoms. In particular, the typical burning and itching in the anus area is familiar to patients who suffer from hemorrhoids. In principle, these are actually completely normal and serve an important purpose in helping the anus to maintain continence. However, problems often arise when they become enlarged, which can best be compared to the development of varicose veins.

In addition to the typical hemorrhoid symptoms, affected patients often also notice blood in their stool. Many conditions can be reduced and eliminated with ointments and stool-regulating measures. However, outpatient surgery is also an option, especially for treating painful haemorrhoids at an advanced stage.

In principle, anyone can suffer from hemorrhoid complaints. However, pregnant women and overweight people are particularly affected. Sitting for long periods and heavy lifting also pose certain risk factors for developing problems with haemorrhoids more quickly and more frequently.

Other complaints and rectal diseases

Although haemorrhoids are one of the most common complaints in the field of proctology, there are of course other conditions that require medical treatment. Perianal vein thrombosis in particular plays a role here, which is practically a nodule in the anus area that can cause similar symptoms to haemorrhoids. However, they are sometimes even more painful and can also develop into so-called marisci after healing. This is an excess of skin, which in most cases has to be surgically removed.

Focus on individual therapies and treatment methods

Especially in the field of proctology, individualized therapies are required, which must be weighed up differently from patient to patient. External treatments, for example with ointments, can also provide improvement. Which is why surgical interventions are not always necessary.

Treatments with ointments often serve to initiate the healing process and allow the symptoms to subside. This can be particularly helpful for haemorrhoids and anal fissures. If this is not enough, outpatient surgery is another treatment option. Such procedures are usually painless as they are performed under anesthesia.

Of course, we also accompany you during surgical treatment as part of the follow-up treatment and care directly after the procedure and are therefore always at your side in the event of possible complications or problems.
